Overview




The MST facilitates patient transportation to the OR in a safe, efficient and organized manner. He/she effects and controls aseptic technique and practices in the Perioperative Department. He/she performs in the second scrub role in operative procedures under the supervision of the scrub/circulator/surgeon. The MST develops, refines and performs those technical skills that may be delegated by a nurse to an unlicensed personnel in keeping with the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The Perioperative MST is supervised by a Director,Desk Facilitator, Educator and perioperative preceptor.

Responsibilities




PART III: POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)Assists in counting of trays/sharp/sponges under supervision of RN.Assists in sterile processing and understands how to flash instruments.Assists OR staff with patient lifting and positioning.Assumes responsibility for assisting with case set up. Restock all necessary items in rooms.Assumes responsibility for assisting with room counts and restocking rooms.Attends unit meetings, daily huddles and reads communication book.Empty and refill bottles of cleaning disinfectant in prescribed manner. Empty and refill mop buckets in the prescribed manner. Empty wastebaskets, linen hampers and mop containers.Fills blanket warmers throughout the day.Functions in the second scrub room holding retractors, suctioning under direct supervision.Gowns and gloves self and others.Knowledge of SPD Sterile Room.Observes and reports pertinent patient information.Observes and reports to the OR unit charge person conditions which may be of value and assistance in the total care of the patient in the OR.Participates in time-out procedures.Performs scrubbing, gowning, open and closed gloving and opening sterile supplies. Understands hood application.Proper use of PPE equipment.Replaces solution bottles at scrub sinks, responsible for monthly assignments, damp dusting.Restocks sterile water and saline bottles to the warmers and cart throughout the day.Retrieves blood from blood bank, transports specimens to Lab, completes monthly assignments, understands how to transport pharmacy irrigation to OR.Returns transport carts to the OPS/PACU after use, cleans with prescribed disinfectant and replaces with clean sheet, pillow and blanket.System of receiving and shipping item to SPD and understands dumbwaiters.Transports patients to and from the OR/OPS/PACU/SPL as necessary.Turn over rooms between cases; terminally clean OR rooms.Understands Chemo and safety precautions.Understands Olie application.Understands Time off requests and email system.Understands Vendor process/ SPD/FOB process.




Qualifications




Experience/Education Requirements:



+ Successful completion of at least two semesters of college preferred. Applicant enrolled in a healthcare degree program with anatomy/physiology and microbiology, preferred.

License or Certification Requirements:



+ C.N.A. State of Illinois registration preferred


+ CPR certification
